OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE FOR: BENEDICT CUMBERBATCH’S MADAME TUSSAUDS WAX FIGURE REVEALED
Tuesday October 21, 2014. Fans of one of the most critically-acclaimed and popular actors on the planet were overwhelmed when they met the new wax figure of Benedict Cumberbatch at Madame Tussauds London this morning.
The Emmy Award winning star, already being talked about for an Oscar for his role in The Imitation Game, received his latest life-size accolade after months of painstaking work by a team of more than 20 Madame Tussauds artists and the fans gave it a resounding thumbs up.
On seeing the figure, Naomi Roper, founder of fan site
benedictcumberbatch.co.uk said, "It is absolutely fantastic, I have had
people starting petitions to get Madame Tussauds London to feature him for a long time, and now he¹s here I think it will definitely be a huge attraction for fans. People will come and see him from all over the world it’s marvellous.”
Cumberbatch was closely involved in the creation process and is hoping to come and visit his likeness very soon. He has, however, seen photographs of the finished figure and is impressed by the results, commenting: "I’m excited to see the finished, perfect, waxy me although slightly terrified… The work is so detailed it’s going to feel a little uncomfortable and surreal seeing what I really look like!" Cumberbatch added, "But being so involved in the entire creation process and working so closely with the team at Madame Tussauds London was a phenomenal experience and really opened my eyes to the artistry that goes into the making of each figure. I just wish it could take selfies and sign autographs!"
The attraction is now steeling itself for an influx of fans eager to see the
figure, which is portrayed ‘premiere ready’, in a stylish Spencer Hart suit,
donated by the tailor, and Benedict’s famous tousled hairstyle. The suit
closely matches the outfit worn by the actor during his memorable
'photobombing' spree at the 2014 Oscars. "We had so many visits to our
website on the day we announced we were creating Benedict¹s figure that our system nearly crashed!” explained Ben Sweet, General Manager at Madame Tussauds London.
He continued: "The demand to feature him here has simply been overwhelming and I am sure fans are going to approve of the likeness. We are extremely grateful to Benedict for the support he gave the team throughout the process. He was unbelievably generous with his time, attending two sittings, and giving us access to his styling team to get everything as accurate as possible. He’s a ground-breaking talent and undoubtedly deserves his place on the A-list here at Madame Tussauds London."
Benedict’s figure is the latest British star to join the attraction’s A-list
line up, and will take up residence alongside fellow Brits Judi Dench and
Kate Winslet, as well as a host of Hollywood names from Brad Pitt and
Angelina Jolie, to Julia Roberts and Johnny Depp.
